QUICKCARE for ORNATE UROMASTYX
-applies to a wide variety of Uro species
Day temps- 80-85 degrees F with 130F+ elevated basking spot
Night temps- 72-85 degrees F
Setup- We mimic our monitor lizard setups for the Uros, with a deep, burrowable soil in a good sized cage. Dry substrates like paper, tile, sand, bird seed and shelf liner are inappropriate for your animal. Learn why. We suggest smaller cages for babies, for a better sense of security and ease of acclimation. We use 4 ft troughs for single adults or adult pairs, 10 ft troughs for larger groups. Uros will dig and burrow in a good soil, but we still provide multiple hide spots on the surface. A good hot spot/basking spot is extremely important, but so is a proper ambient temperature. Have a Temp Gun handy, and know how to use it. Small, tight hide spots, good sized water dish, soil substrate is kept moderately moistened, moderate cage humidity. Both babies and adults do terrifically in our soil setups, and grow like weeds.
Basking Spot- We use wide basking spots to provide temp gradients up to130°F or more. Elevated basking spots allow us to achieve proper temps using 50 watt Halogen flood bulbs . Proper temp gradients also allow for multiple moisture levels without any problems. We use no UVB or full spectrum lighting at all.
Daily care- Keep substrate moistened as necessary. It should be moist at depth, but not wet at any level. Spot clean as necessary.
Feeding- We feed baby and juvie Uros 6 days a week. We offer a variety of foods including fresh veggies, dried peas and lentils, Rep Cal dried Iguana diet (mini size), and feeder roaches. We also supplement the foods with Miner All-I and Uro Superfoods. Adults get fed according to need and body weight.
Notes- Read our entire FAQ for more detailed discussion of MANY husbandry topics that can benefit your setups and animals. We approach the Uros differently than most other hobbyists and breeders, keeping them setup very similar to our monitors. Most folks do not use the substrate that we use, or allow the humidity that we allow, and most folks do not see the phenomenal growth and progress we have seen (350+ grams for yearlings, breeding and viable egg production for yearlings). This caresheet lays out simple details, you can read more about our Uro progress and theory at our Uro FAQ, linked below. We are also happy to discuss Uro husbandry theory by phone, give us a call if you want to chat Uros!
